Lymphedema Treatment with Certified Lymphedema Therapists

Lymphedema Specialists in Therapy and Prevention are Recognizing the Need for New Lymphedema Treatments

New treatments for lymphedema in the United States are emerging with certified lymphedema therapists at the forefront.  Currently, there are several million cases of lymphedema in the United States alone, the greatest majority occurring after surgery, trauma or radiation therapy. One out of three women who undergo an axillary dissection for breast cancer will eventually develop lymphedema.

The treatment for lymphedema in the United States has previously lagged far behind the numerous advances for the treatment of other dangerous and debilitating diseases. Until now, the most commonly treatments available to lymphedema specialists were pressure gradient pumps, liposuction, resection, or complex micro surgery.

Results of surgery for lymphedema have been minimal at best, with a high rate of morbidity. Liposuction and pressure therapies have been shown to actually exacerbate the condition, making future lymphedema treatment far more difficult.

Lymphedema Therapists are Using New Treatments

Specialists at Lymphedema Therapy are now able to manage and greatly improve this disorder through Complex Lymphedema Therapy (CLT).

Complex Lymphedema Therapy consists of the following lymphedema treatments:

  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Compression bandaging
  • Skin care
  • Patient-specific lymphedema physical therapy exercises
  • Exercise for lymphedema is also emerging as an important component of lymphedema treatment.  Follow this link to learn more about lymphedema and exercise.

The basic concept of CLT is to maximize central lymphatic drainage. This treatment of lymphedema is accomplished by opening collateral vessels to channel peripheral lymph into normally functioning lymphotomes.

Complex Lymphedema Therapy (CLT)

Complex Lymphedema Therapy (CLT) is relatively new to the United States although it has been a successful modality employed for many years in Europe and Australia. The correct application of this type of lymphedema treatment requires extensive training. The certified lymphedema therapists at the Lymphedema Therapy organization have had the opportunity to be trained by two of the world‘s top lymphedema specialists, Dr. Judith Casley-Smith and Dr. J.R. Casley-Smith from Australia. Together with several of their therapists from Australia, they trained, instructed and supervised the staff at our lymphedema treatment center.
